There are moments in motherhood that no one prepares you for.

The quiet drive home after an evaluation. The weight of words written about your child by people who have only known them for an hour. The ache of wondering if the world will ever see what you see every single day.

This poem was written from that place.

It is for every parent who has grieved the life they imagined while discovering one even more beautiful. It is for every child who has ever been underestimated, misunderstood, or reduced to a diagnosis. And it is for the mothers who carry both heartbreak and fierce hope in the very same heart.

These words are my reminder—to myself and to anyone willing to listen—that a diagnosis can describe a child, but it can never define them.

Because behind every label is a soul that deserves to be seen.

This is for my daughter, Josie.

She is More Than just a Label

You say she only echoes our words.
I say you’re not listening.
She speaks in the language of fierce hugs, joyful laughter, gentle hands, and eyes that say more than words ever could.
Every sound she finds is hard-earned.
Every new word is an act of courage.
She is so much more than just a label.
You want her to fit into our world.
But perhaps the lesson was never hers to learn.
Perhaps the world is asking us to slow down, quiet our expectations, and discover the beauty of seeing life through her eyes.
She is so much more than just a label.
She was born feeling what you only brush against—
every sound.
every touch.
every joy.
every ache.
The world has always been louder, brighter, and deeper for her, and somehow, she still meets it with wonder.
She is so much more than just a label.
You say she doesn’t know how to play.
But the trees would disagree.
Beneath the sky.. she doesn’t just play—she awakens Mother Nature.
Becoming part of the wind, the wildflowers, and the woods.
Every step is an adventure.
Every laugh reminds us that there is more than one beautiful way to experience the world.
She is so much more than just a label.
You say she chooses toys that are predictable.
Maybe you are not looking closely enough.
She reaches for the toys that pop, spin, click, twirl, light up, and surprise her.
She’s captivated by movement,
delighted by cause and effect,
and forever chasing the magic of “What happens next?”
My daughter is autistic—but she is so much more than just a label.
She reminds me every day that the most beautiful minds are never meant to fit inside simple expectations.
So when you write your notes, don’t let the diagnosis become the whole story.
Beyond the label is a little girl who laughs with the trees, dances with the wind, loves with her whole heart, and carries a light no chart could ever measure.
Her name is Josie. She is autistic. And that is where her story begins—not where it ends.

If these words touched your heart, I’d love to hear from you. Whether you’re an autism parent, a caregiver, someone who loves a child on the spectrum, or simply someone who found comfort here, your story matters. Leave a comment below to share your thoughts, your journey, or even just a few words of encouragement. My hope is that this space becomes more than a blog—that it becomes a community where no one feels alone. You never know when your story might be the hope someone else has been searching for.
